Best High Mileage motorcycle ??

Post by Steve Lee »

I'm getting to that stage and thinking maybe a change is needed - but as always to WHAT
Started looking around on the internet and found this - it is a few years old, but would be interested in comments.
Specifically I'm thinking of buying new - but ..... :?:

The fella in question is a courier called Stan, who was in his early 60's at the time of the article. His list of bikes is as follows, along with the mileage he put on to each:

1983 Kawasaki GT550 - 15,000 miles
1984 Kawasaki GT750 - 184,000 - "Worst bike I ever bought"
1986 Yamaha FJ1100 - 30,000
1987 Yamaha FJ1200 - 14,000 in 3 weeks - returned to the dealer due to excessive vibration
1987 Yamaha FJ1200 - 90,000
1988 Honda VFR750 FJ - 140,000
1989 Honda VFR750 FK - 149,000 - knocked over at an airport, then traded in
1990 Honda VFR750 FL - 852,000 - engine replaced at 440,000 after it blew its head gasket
1996 Kawasaki ZZR1100 C3 - 252,000
1997 Kawasaki ZZR1100 D1 - 60,000 - written off
1998 Honda Blackbird - 410,000
2001 Honda Blackbird - 205,000 - current bike at the time of the article

I can imagine the first response being something like "old Honda's never die" :eyebrow:

Honda Pan-European would be my go to i think , or nc700 ? oh and a scot oiler

Kawasaki GT550 - very very gutless , no fun thrashing it day in and day out

Kawasaki GT750 - much more like it , elecs were a little suspect but very rated beyond this , i quite liked mine , bit tractory

Yamaha FJ1200 - fat and lazy in many ways which is what you want , poor on fuel , dont whatever you do drop it

Honda VFR800 - wonderful but not a courier bike , too complex if it goes wrong imo , smooooooth , fast , maybe too fast

Kawasaki ZZR1100 - fat hideous mess , stupidly heavy , i can forgive say the zx10 but not this plastic monotonicity , no!

i also ran allsorts from cx500/650`s to vt`s to bmw`s both K and R serious to even a couple of moto guzzi`s , thinking about it i must have been mad ,,,, even a yam rd350 at one point !

I have a chap from Ipswich that occasionally subs for me and he has a Dullville with 280k miles on it. 8)
Just recently his alternator threw a wobbly and had to get recovered only for the bike to fall off the recovery truck a few hundred metres down the road
But he's back using it :icon_kiss:

I would actually have said the Mk1 650 as I don't know anyone that has abused the 700 enough to test it

thats fair

the old ntv600 was a great compromise between power and longevity , they went on and on and on , the seat was arseachey but beyond that great , never had the 650 though and thats also a serious goto bike

goldwing ?, great for slotting through traffic as long as its 3am on a sunday morning , bit underpowered in 1200 form and quite easy to ride given its pure size , if nothing else you land in style and dry(ish ) plus its a magnificent advertising tool , mpg is so so at high 30`s and a stereo is a laugh for a month or 2 until you realize not everyone like the progidy , if i were going back to thrashing bikes i think this could be one id also seriously consider ... dont drop it

I have had about 5 NT650V Deauville, bought them used with 20-30K on each, each on e got to 130-140K before they began to be uneconomical to repair, you know the exhaust was beginning to blow, clutch slip etc seemed a wiser move to scrap it and put the money towards another.

NC700S everywhere in London, speaking to a dispatch rider he said there great for work (mpg) but wouldnt have one for pleasure ::D: bloke i know with a 650 deuville (170k+) reckons only thing there know for is the water hoses going (he carries spares ::D: ) & there better round town on fuel compared to the 700 version

Depends on your work.

If you are going out to euro and off to brum, leeds, liverpool every other day then I'd say a pan euro 1100 for not a lot of money.

If your work is mainly within 100 miles and into london several times a week then a deauville will do what you need.

Both shafties and both plenty capable of the mileages.

Hi Steve.. I have a subbie who has a Blackbird a FJ12 and a Pan, but swears by his Blackbird hes been into euro a couple of times on it, I on the other hand like the Pan even though its on its 3rd engine and are pretty capable of 150+thousand if looked after and not thrashed, just got 15000 thou out of a rear tyre and 18000 on the front and still with a bit of tread on, as long as its not an ex plod bike, myself and Bramble have experienced these problems.. But I also like my Tiger 955i its probably better for summer and euro work than winter work... Be ems I wouldnt pee on one of it was on fire..

The Pan 1300 would be a good bet and dont have the corrosion issue's the 11 has.. its hard to say, but for fun, touring, racing, mpg the Tiger wins hands down..

My 1100 pan is on 160K and mechanically runs like a dream, although as its ex mod I think the police electrics were pulled out with one foot against the frame as it has a few niggly electrical problems. Not least the police handle switch gear, I had the kill switch disconnected and now the headlight switch is playing up

I used to get 15K out of Rear Bridgestones on the Deauville, only get around 12 on them on the Pan

They are silly money for really no more bike.

You could get a rough 2003 1300 banger with 60k on it for £2500 or a 1999 1100 with 20k on it for £1500

The 1300 have had issues with wobbles when loaded and parts are still hugely expensive.

My 1100 has had zero problems in the last 60k.
Customers are far removed from the usual van snobs, many bikes out there are like scrappers, especially in london, they tend not to care what a bike looks like, as long as it gets there.

Hi Steve,

Having advised you on your two previous courier bike choices you ignored my Pan suggestions and opted for a Moto Guzzi and a BM.

Honda has proved itself of reliability.

I currently own a Pan 1300 and love it. Covered 50k with no issues. Still my Courier bike choice for medium to long distance work.

Let us know what you decide on,

We do a Berlin delivery maybe 3 times a year & it would go on a bike, the roads are great & some parts unlimited speed thats why ::D:
