The 'Hendon' scam (package for M&S or Smiths)
This scam has been going on for a few months and is still catching people out.
You get a call from someone at Marks & Spencer or WH Smith, asking you to pick up an urgent package (a CD in an envelope) from Hendon. You are told to wait in a side road and ring them, and the package will be brought to you.
When you are on your way they ring again to ask you to pay for the item in cash, and they will pay you back when you deliver.
So you collect the item, pay the £170 cash (
 ) and take the envelope to the M&S store, and of course they don't know anything about it and you have lost your cash. The envelope contains a blank CD.
The scam is being investigated by PC Jacqui Jack at the Met but don't expect any real-time help. When I emailed the contact I was given to confirm the details I got this reply:

Please do not start any more new topics about this, or copy more posts from other forums. If you have anything to add please reply on this topic.Hi Yes I am it would be best to email [Jacqui.Jack at Met.Police.Uk]rather than phone as I work shifts etc. However if phone is the only option it is best to ring 0300 123 1212, they will take intial report and I will then recontact. I will need the package delivered to be kept by.

Thanks for highlighting this and unfortunately in times of hardship some people like to see it as an opportunity to scam others. This crowd called me twice.
The second time I was available to do it. I will mention what the alarm bells for me were so others can be on the alert for similar scams. Its worth noting that in the begining he came across as very professional.
I had no GIT and he was not bothered.
He was stressing the point that he was the transport manager.
There would be a pallet collection from St Albans but first I would have to go to Hendon and collect a piece of IT he gave me an address but said I must call when Im on the way and they will come out to meet (Ding Dong)
Before we were all set to go I asked for his contact number and said he would call me back because he was on a switchboard.
One last phone call to me and he said I would need to pay nearly £200 cash at Hendon which would be rembursed when I got to M&S headquarters in Baker Street. (Major Alarm Bells)
Ok so Im to give a guy in the street £200 eh no. Do a major company like M&S need delivery drivers to pay cash from thier pockect ? I dont think so !
I can see however how people could fall for this, but you have been warned !

I got a call on this one yesterday (thursday).
As soon as he said M&S Hendon the alarm bells rang.
I told the bloke I was already on a job & couldn't do it, so he asked if I could give me the names of other couriers that I sub to.
I asked for his number to call him back ( i was going to give him the number of the police fraud unit) but he said he would call me later - surprise surprise, he didn't call back.
Well done for posting this scam on here.

Its down to the met police and a policeman who thought he knew him, thankgod he was right. He has done 50 couriers last year and when i first contacted the met i was number 17 this year. Dread to think how long he had been doing this. I will be going to court so will post what he gets.

If you have been caught by this scam and you haven't reported it to the Met yet, they want to hear from you:
Jacqui Jack wrote:Yes please. There are three ways of doing it.
Either by their local station, by phone to switchboard 0300 123 1212, they will create report and send it through to me (can they specifically say PC Jacqui Jack dealing) or by email to me [Jacqui.Jack@met.police.uk].
If they still have the packages I need them to be kept as I do require them.
I promise to respond to each victim as quickly as possible.

Apparently this scam is running again -- a Shed 5 member avoided it but a London courier got stung on a Harrow to Barnsley job.
